Is an SAT Test Preparation Course Necessary?

Thousands of hopeful high school students take SAT courses to try to achieve a high score on the SAT test. Thousands of students (or more likely, their parents), dish out thousands of dollars thinking that an SAT prep course is the answer to all of their problems, or even worse, that an SAT course is absolutely necessary to score high on the SAT test. Although SAT prep courses are helpful, they should be more of a Plan B.

What is Taught in an SAT Course

Here's the truth. Every test strategy that SAT courses teach can be found in inexpensive SAT strategy books. So why not try learning SAT strategies on your own first and save a few thousand dollars? If you take an SAT course, you'll be learning the same material found in a twenty dollar book. Your local library probably has some SAT test prep books that you can check out for free!

Sure, a test prep course will provide you with more study materials, but you can also just buy more books from your local book store. You could buy twenty books for twenty dollars each, and it would still end up costing less than an SAT course!

So before you decide to dish out a few grand at your nearest test prep center, try preparing for the SAT yourself. Make a study plan, buy some good SAT books, and stick to your plan.

Whether you decide to take an SAT course or not, it's up to you to study and prepare. If you want a high score on the SAT, you have to put in the time.

Good luck!
