What is the GRE?

The GRE, or Graduate Record Exam, is a standardized test required by most graduate schools in the admissions process. The GRE tests knowledge and skills in three sections--Analytical Writing, Quantitative, and Verbal. Analytical Writing consists of two essay questions while Quantitative tests math skills and Verbal tests test-takers' English skills.

If you are planning on applying to graduate school, most likely you will have to take the GRE at one time or another. Many graduate schools require that you take a GRE subject test(s) as well. Most graduate school websites or applications specify what tests are required. If you are unsure, you should contact the graduate program so that you know your application is complete. Incomplete applications will often not be considered.
